July 29 2020 – Mitchell Grimes
This week we caught up with the Chan brothers from UNWNTD FC to talk sustainability in football & fashion, tote bags, and a couple of their favourite kits.
Hey Boys! Firstly could you tell us a bit about yourselves?
Thank you for reaching out! Love what you are bringing to the Aussie market.
We are twin brothers from Brisbane who live & breathe football. Keith is working in Marketing in Germany for the three stripes whilst Kevin works in the field of buying for an Australian fashion retailer. Although the distance, the partnership works well. Keith has been able to source some amazing kits in Europe for us to bring back to the Australian market.
For those who aren’t aware of your brand can you tell us a bit about UNWNTD FC and the inspiration behind it?
UNWNTD FC is inspired by giving football jerseys a second life through new consumable designs such as tote bags, pouches and laptop sleeves - the opportunities in up-cycling are endless.
In a nutshell, we drive to bridge the gap between football, fashion and sustainability.
Our inspiration came from our marketing degree’s and previous experience working in the sporting industry, where we saw samples being destroyed almost on a daily basis. Hence the idea to give unwanted apparel a new life.
What can we expect from UNWNTD FC in the future?
Upcycling concepts are limitless, it's been just over two years now since we made our first initial samples (Shout-out to Dane from @thefinalthird for trusting us to cut up his arsenal kit!) and we still have new concepts coming to mind and being developed.
Apart from more collaborations with football destinations, we also want to focus beyond the product, and with the wider community in general, bringing stories and creators together. Social impact is an area that really inspires us, and we have a project in the works that is driven by this message - the product is going to be sustainable and ethical in every way.
Can you tell us a bit about your background in football and how you first got involved?
We both started playing from a young age in Brisbane, loved our futsal and 11-a-side. Keith was quick, whilst Kevin had the tekkers. What brought us into the game was the first jerseys we were gifted by our father - United jerseys with Beckham and Giggs name sets!
As we were closing in on graduating from our Marketing degree’s, we were presented with the opportunity to work in the football industry with adidas HQ. We were super grateful for this opportunity to see where the magic happens, where the stories come to life and the processes behind the product that ends up on the shelves of retailers across the world. This insight gave us the knowledge and foundations to start a brand of our own which merges subcultures and trends in the world of football.
